IRS, FBI raid longtime Toledo business

Feds spend much of day at Al Peake, a produce wholesaler since the 1940s

Agents from the IRS and FBI on Friday raided a local food service business in North Toledo.

Special Agent Vicki Anderson from the FBI’s office in Cleveland said the raid starting at about 9 a.m. Friday at Al Peake & Sons & Daughter Too Food Service, 4949 Stickney Ave., was an “IRS-led endeavor,” but the agency had agents assisting.

Agents remained at the company into the afternoon, but it was unclear how many were involved. Speaking at the scene Friday afternoon, IRS Special Agent Daniel Dever from the agency’s criminal investigations unit, said he was “on official business” at the site since morning. He would not comment further.

Craig Casserly, an IRS spokesman, could not offer details about the day’s events because “everything is sealed in federal court.”

Mr. Casserly expected everything to be finished Friday. He was not aware of any arrests.

Al Peake & Sons & Daughter Too, a wholesale produce company operated in Toledo since the late 1940s, had been located in the downtown Warehouse District before moving to larger space on Stickney in 2009. On its Web site, the company calls itself a third-generation family-owned and operated food supplier and lists Philip Peake and Tony Peake as co-owners/​presidents. Much of its business is with locally owned restaurants or cafeterias in nursing homes and hospitals.
