MARBLEHEAD, Ohio - Authorities believe a medical condition was the likely cause of a one-vehicle collision today on the Sandusky Bay Bridge in Ottawa County that injured the driver.
State Highway Patrol troopers said Richard Walleman, 60, of Brooklyn, Mich., was driving eastbound on State Rt. 2 about 4 p.m. when his pickup went off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail on the bridge. It then went back across to the other side of the road and struck a cement barricade before stopping on the left shoulder of the road.
Patrol officials said the victim appeared to have some kind of medical condition that caused him to crash into the guardrail. Mr. Walleman was flown to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, with minor injuries, troopers said.
State Rt. 2 on the bridge was closed for about 30 minutes after the incident but has since re-opened to traffic.
The crash is still under investigation, and no citation have been issued.
