Natural gas service is expected to be restored sometime today to two dozen downtown businesses who have been without the fuel all day after a line was struck at Promenade Park.

The 24 impacted businesses were expected to have gas restored by the end of the night if Columbia Gas employees could access all of the businesses, said spokesman Chris Kozak.

Some downtown motorists were temporarily inconvenienced after construction crews struck and broke the 4-inch medium-pressure plastic gas main at about 11 a.m. today.

Summit Street, between Monroe and Cherry streets, was closed until about 1:30 p.m., police said. Part of South St. Clair Street was also closed.

Several buildings on Summit, near Promenade Park, were evacuated briefly.
