Two dozen downtown businesses were without gas for most of the day Tuesday after a line was struck at Promenade Park.

Gas for the 24 affected businesses was being restored late Tuesday as long as Columbia Gas employees could access all of the businesses, said spokesman Chris Kozak.

Some downtown motorists were temporarily inconvenienced Tuesday after construction crews struck and broke the 4-inch medium-pressure plastic gas main at about 11 a.m.

Summit Street, between Monroe and Cherry streets, was closed until about 1:30 p.m., police said. Part of South St. Clair Street was also closed. Several buildings on Summit, near Promenade Park, were evacuated briefly.
