MARBLEHEAD -- A Marblehead man was killed today in single-vehicle crash in Danbury Township.

Jeffery Sloan, 43, was killed just before 1 p.m., after his sport-utility vehicle veered off Port Clinton Eastern Road, struck two highway signs and a tree, said Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Zachary Yoder.

A fire started in the engine close to the gas tank as rescue crews worked to free Mr. Sloan from vehicle. He was pulled from the Ford Edge before the fire spread but he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash, said Trooper Yoder.

Troopers said alcohol was not a factor in the incident but are still investigating.

Mr. Sloan's body was transported to the Lucas County Coroner's Office, where an autopsy will be performed.
