A 33-year-old man’s body was recovered Saturday morning from a man-made pond near a Maumee apartment complex where he lived after a missing-person report was filed.

The Lucas County Coroner’s Office identified the body as Eric Battershell.

Maumee police Detective Corey Scharer said he lived in the Lake View Shores Apartments off Key Street. Police said in a statement that the body was believed to be that of a man whose family had reported him missing.

Detective Scharer said the body was recovered after authorities searched for several hours in the 10-acre pond, which is surrounded on three sides by apartment buildings. The Ohio Turnpike is near its northern edge.

About noon, searchers brought a small boat to shore.

A shrouded body lay on an opposite bank before firefighters placed it on a stretcher that was loaded into a coroner’s vehicle.

“The body was recovered, and there’s an investigation pending,” the detective said.

Except to say Maumee police will work with the coroner’s office on the investigation, he declined to comment further, citing “respect of family members.”

An autopsy likely will be performed Monday.

A woman who answered the telephone at the Lake View Shores office number would not comment and said no one else was available to speak to a reporter.
