The death of a man pulled Saturday from a man-made pond in Maumee appears accidental, officials said Monday.

Eric Battershell, 33, drowned, said Dr. Cynthia Beisser, a Lucas County deputy coroner who performed an autopsy on the man.

An official death ruling awaits the results of toxicology tests, but there were no signs of trauma, Dr. Beisser said.

Citing cold temperatures, the deputy coroner said she could not determine how long his body was in the water before being discovered, nor did she know how Mr. Battershell came to be in the 10-acre pond at the Key Street street apartment complex where he lived. Mr. Battershell’s family had reported him missing, according to Maumee police.

Mr. Battershell was a master’s-degree student at the University of Toledo who had previously worked as a civil engineer in New York. He was a 1999 graduate of Hicksville (Ohio) High School and held a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ohio State.
