HURON, Ohio -- A Spring Lake, Mich., man was injured when the tractor-tanker rig he was driving crashed and overturned on State Rt. 2 just west of U.S. 6 near this Erie County community Tuesday night, spilling hundreds of gallons of milk and closing the road for about four hours, authorities said.

David Demaagd, 68, was taken by a ground ambulance to Firelands Regional Medical Center where he was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol. He was listed in fair condition today, a hospital spokesman said.

The rig was driving east on Route 2 in the right lane about 8:30 p.m. when for unknown reasons it drove off the road, troopers at the patrol's Sandusky post said. The vehicle then struck the median, overturned, and came to rest on its side, spilling hundreds of gallons of milk from the tanker, which had ruptured. The diesel fuel tank also ruptured, spilling diesel fuel.

The eastbound lanes of the state route were closed for about four hours for a cleanup, the patrol said.

Traffic on Route 2 returned to normal about 12:30 a.m. today.

The crash remains under investigation.

Huron is about 65 miles southeast of Toledo.
