A wrong-way driver traveling south on northbound I-75 late today was injured as the vehicle struck a tractor-trailer and at least two other vehicles, authorities said. The crash closed the highway and officials reported that it could remain closed through Thursday morning, as crews cleaned up large pieces of debris off the roadway.

The crash was reported about 9:05 p.m. on I-75 between Alexis and Ottawa River roads. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle appeared trapped, but rescue crews managed to free the driver, who was taken by Life Squad to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. A condition was not available.

No one else was transported to a hospital, authorities said.

Toledo police diverted northbound traffic off I-75 at the Ottawa River exit. The crash remains under investigation -- including where the vehicle entered the interstate.

"Really scary moments for everybody," said Toledo fire battalion Chief Karen Marquardt. "You think going the wrong way on 75, the people who were struck, they were lucky there weren't worse injuries."
