MONROE -- A Carleton, Mich. man was seriously injured when a car he was driving and a garbage truck collided at North Telegraph Road and Mall Road in Monroe County's Frenchtown Township today, authorities said.

William Xerri, 70, was listed in critical condition at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton, Mich. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

Mr. Xerri was driving south in the right lane of North Telegraph about 7:40 a.m. when for unknown reasons he failed to stop for the red traffic light at Mall and drove into the path of the garbage truck, which was turning left from northbound North Telegraph Road onto westbound Mall, sheriff deputies said.

The crash remains under investigation.
