1 youth dead, another injured after Bellevue crash

BELLEVUE, Ohio --  A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured when their car crashed on State Rt. 18  near this community Sunday evening, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Garrett Holmes of Bellevue, who was driving the car, was pronounced dead at the scene in Seneca County's Thompson Township, according to the patrol's Fremont post.

Dakota Schaffer, the passenger, also of Bellevue, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was transported to University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio, with injuries that appeared to be life threatening, troopers said. A hospital spokesman said today young Schaffer remained at the hospital. His condition was not released.

The car was driving southwest on Route 18 a few miles southwest of Bellevue about 9:20 p.m. when for unknown reasons it drove off the left side of the road, struck a ditch, and traveled over it, the patrol said. The vehicle then struck a barn, landscape rocks, and a tree.

Both victims were wearing seat belts, according to the patrol.

The crash remains under investigation.

Located in Huron and Sandusky counties, Bellevue is about 45 miles southeast of Toledo.
