Driver in double-fatal crash near Fremont was drunk
1/28/2014FREMONT -- The driver blamed for a fatal wrong-way collision on U.S. 20/U.S. 6 near Fremont had a blood-alcohol level twice the state’s legal limit.
The Ohio Highway Patrol issued a statement today that Charles Starks, 61, of Fremont was impaired and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.162 on Dec. 23 when his wrong-way vehicle struck a westbound car driven by Evelyn Hunt, 57, also of Fremont, on the Fremont Bypass near its westerly junction of Routes 20 and 6 in Sandusky Township.

Both Starks and Mrs. Hunt were pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs. Hunt’s grandson Zackary Zimmerman, 15, was treated for serious injuries.
“These crashes are preventable,” Lt. Matthew Meredith, commander of the state patrol's Fremont post, said in a written statement. “Everyone needs to do their part in making our roadways safer. Don’t drink and drive, slow down and pay attention to your surroundings, and wear your safety belt to protect you from other people’s mistakes.”
