Lucas Co. sheriff warns of telephone scam
2/8/2014The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam in which the caller claims to be a deputy.
The caller tells the resident a warrant has been issued for his or her arrest because the resident did not show up for jury duty, the sheriff’s office says. The caller then asks for personal information — Social Security number, birth date, address — and says, for a fee, the matter can be resolved.
Sheriff’s officials said neither deputies nor anyone else from the sheriff’s office will call anyone to advise of a warrant; a deputy also would not ask for personal data on the phone.
Officials suggest hanging up immediately if contacted by a suspected scammer and calling the local police department.
