MILLBURY, Ohio -- A Fremont man was killed today on the Ohio Turnpike when his sport utility vehicle, which was stopped in traffic, was struck by a tractor-trailer and pushed into the rear of another rig.

Troopers at the Swanton post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said John E. Madden, 67, was eastbound just west of the I-280 interchange about 3:15 p.m. when he was struck in the rear by a semi driven by Michael R. French, Jr., 39, of Pleasant Prairie, Wis. The impact pushed Mr. Madden's vehicle into the semi driven by Randolph Clarke, 58, of Covington, Ga.

Mr. Madden was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. All drivers wore seat belts, troopers said.

The crash closed eastbound lanes of the turnpike for about 30 minutes.

Troopers are continuing to investigate. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor.
