Bond was set at $1 million today for a man who was arrested Monday in Holland and charged in a fatal shooting last month in East Toledo, authorities said.

During his arraignment at Toledo Municipal Court today, Deontay Smith, 24, was ordered held in lieu of the bond at the Lucas County jail until Wednesday, with his case continued to that date at his request. He is charged with murder in the shooting death of Michael Macklin, Jr., 20, Toledo police said.

The suspect was arrested at about 6 p.m. in the 6100 block of Trust Drive in Holland, police said. The suspect was not given an option to post 10 percent of the bond and be released from the jail.

Mr. Macklin was shot about 1:12 a.m. Feb. 2 in East Toledo while in his car as he tried to flee from others who may have gotten into an altercation with him at a downtown Toledo drinking establishment, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead later that morning.

Toledo police had been following up on a light-metallic colored SUV in video footage of the scene that they said was captured by a police camera at the corner of Front and Main shortly before Mr. Macklin was shot at Greenwood and Walden avenues, a few blocks away.

Authorities believed the vehicle followed Mr. Macklin when he left Club Ellyzees, 319 N. Superior St.
