Boy critically injured in car-truck collision

SANDUSKY — A mother and her 3-year-old son were injured Tuesday when a car and a refuse truck collided on Mason Road near State Rt. 269 near Sandusky, closing Mason for about three hours, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Nevan Jordan, 3, a passenger in a car driven by Heather Russell, 23, of Bellevue, Ohio, was in critical condition late Tuesday at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where he was flown.

Ms. Russell, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center with incapacitating injuries, according to the patrol’s Sandusky post.

The use of proper child restraint is being investigated.

The Cyclone Services truck driven by Brian Bowers, 44, of Vickery, Ohio, was eastbound on Mason in Erie County’s Groton Township about 9:14 a.m. when it stopped to collect trash, at which time the vehicle was struck in the rear by the Russell car, troopers said.

The truck driver was not injured.
