Toledo fire crews douse a pile of scrap metal which caught fire just before noon today at the OmniSource facility on North Detroit Avenue.

Fire crews are battling a massive scrap metal fire  in North Toledo at OmniSource Corp., which is a metal recycling facility.

The fire at 5130 N. Detroit Ave. broke out just before noon and black smoke could be seen in the air from miles away.

The piles of scrap metal were covered with oil that heated up, sparking the blaze in an auto-generated fire, Toledo fire Battalion Chief David Hitt said.

Battalion Chief Hitt said facility operations were stopped while fire crews got the blaze under control and are expected to resume soon.

There were no injuries or evacuation of the facility.

    A damage estimate was unavailable.
