Neighborhood Spring Sweeps to enforce code

Mayor D. Michael Collins announced Wednesday plans for spring cleanups of Toledo neighborhoods.

The annual Spring Sweeps begun under former Mayor Mike Bell will continue but with an added dimension, the mayor said at a news conference in Galliers Park at Putnam Street and Delaware Avenue in the Old Towne neighborhood.

Mayor Collins said new to this year’s program will be a police officer assigned to the sector for the Old Towne area to assist the departments of inspection, neighborhoods, and environmental services enforce city codes for residential and commercial properties.

He said the emphasis will be to build partnerships with the neighborhoods and city departments, and organizations to improve housing and buildings.

“Neighborhoods that are tidy are extremely important; neighborhoods that are blight-free and neighborhoods that become neighborhoods again and are not just places to live,” he said.

Weekend cleanups will be in the Cherry Street Legacy area, Point Place, Broadway corridor in South Toledo, and Wernert area neighborhoods in West Toledo.

Local building and home improvement stores will be providing discounts to property owners who buy products that will help them fix up their properties to bring them into compliance with city codes.
