31 law officers pass advanced driving class
State casino revenue pays for the program
4/21/2014Thirty-one police officers and sheriff’s deputies from northwest Ohio law-enforcement agencies recently completed an advanced emergency-vehicle driving course at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.
“The leading cause of on-duty deaths of law-enforcement officers nationally is automobile-related traffic crashes,” said John Born, director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
State casino revenue dedicated to law enforcement training pays for the program. Individual communities were required to pay their officers’ expenses before the casino funding became available, according to the public safety department.
The latest area officers to complete the class are Robert Bess, James Desalle, Robert Gardin, Mark Gilliam, Corey Mook, John Powell, Michael Shook, and Kevin Youskiewicz of the Sandusky Police Department; Robert Fitzgerald III and Michael Meyers of the North Baltimore Police Department; Nate Elliott, Shilo Frankhart, Justin Kiser, and Chad Marchetto of the Fostoria Police Department; James Bowens, Ryan Claymen, Ross Glowinski, and Matthew Jacobs of the Huron Police Department; Rashuan Armey and Mark Janowiecki of the Defiance Police Department; and Charles Roub and Keith Swisher of the Sherwood Police Department.
Sheriff’s deputies certified from the class are Todd Bucher, Rodney Griffin, and Shane Leeth of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, and Joshua Bayer, Nick Burke, Jerry Cress, Shawn Feldner, Nate Music, and Scott Patterson of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
