Toledo police took a 14-year-old boy into custody Monday after he barricaded himself in his grandmother’s southwest Toledo home.

Police responded to the home in the 800 block of Sibley Street about 2:45 p.m. after a relative reported one or two juveniles, possibly armed, could be inside.

Authorities shot tear gas into the residence shortly after 4 p.m. The teen called 911 from a land line and said he would come out the back door. He was taken into custody without incident.

The Toledo SWAT team searched the home as a precaution.

Authorities said they were investigating whether the juvenile pistol-whipped another teen near McTigue Elementary School during a robbery earlier in the day, police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said.

That incident was reported to Rogers High School Principal Kelly Welch, said Patty Mazur, the Toledo Public Schools’ spokesman. The students involved — victims and suspects — attend Rogers.

Ms. Mazur said neither McTigue nor Rogers were put on lockdown “because it didn’t happen within the school.” She said she did not know whether the principal was told a gun was involved in the robbery.

Police said charges against the teen would be filed, but it was not immediately clear what those charges would be.
