One person suffered minor injuries and others were potentially out of their homes for the night after fire struck a southwest Toledo apartment building Thursday.

Fire in the building at 4866 South Village Dr., reported about 9:25 p.m., was confined to the apartment where it started, Toledo fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said. Firefighters rescued one occupant who was treated at the scene and helped three to five others down ladders from balconies on the second and third floors.

The affected building had 12 apartments, and around 10:30 p.m. Lieutenant Hertzfeld did not know if the fire department's efforts to ventilate smoke from the other units would succeed in time for residents to return for the night.

The fire reportedly started in a kitchen, but its cause remained under investigation.
