Hours after a 3-year-old boy was found wandering in South Toledo, his mother reported him missing and was subsequently arrested.

Arica McGee, 22, of 438 Hyatt Lane, is charged with one count of child endangering. She is to be arraigned today in Toledo Municipal Court.

Ms. McGee's toddler was found Thursday afternoon, walking on Spencer Avenue near South Avenue. The boy, who was alone, was carrying a $20 bill. The boy, who did not know his address or phone number, was first in the custody of police and then taken to Lucas County Children Services.

Julie Malkin, spokesman for the children services agency, said the boy was brought in between 1 and 1:30 p.m. While he was there, he was “well doted on,” Ms. Malkin said. She declined to say who was caring for the boy now.

Ms. McGee has at least one other son, but it was not clear who had custody of the boy.

A children services employee sent a cellphone photo of the boy to Toledo police Sgt. Anthony Gillen. The sergeant, along with Sgt. William Wauford, was able to identify the boy, according to court records.
