Federal and local law enforcement have arrested 20 people in Toledo as part of a sweep targeting the Sureños gang.

The arrests were part of a month-long national operation called Project Southbound, coordinated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations. The Toledo Police Gang Task Force participated in the operation.

The Sureños, also known as Sur 13, originated in Southern California and are affiliated with the Mexican Mafia. The Sureños are expanding faster than any other national-level gang in the United States, according to the Department of Justice.
