PORT CLINTON — Someone claiming to be the Ottawa County sheriff threatened, on the phone, to arrest people for missing jury duty if they did not send money.

The victims, Port Clinton residents, told the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office a man called and said that, because they did not show for jury duty, an arrest warrant had been issued. The caller said if money was sent via Pay Pal, the warrant would be revoked.

Officials said the call is a scam and that “at no point would any police agency handle a warrant in this manner.” They ask that anyone who receives a similar call report it to local police.
