The Toledo Fire Department is warning residents of a donation scam in which someone is claiming to be a department representative.

The callers tell people they work for the fire department and that they are seeking minimum donations of $500. The caller also usually mentions firesafetymagnets.com, a Web site that claims to make dry-erase boards with contact numbers and fire-safety tips, which the fire department then distributes.

“The Toledo Fire Department does not, under any circumstances, solicit donations,” fire Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld said.

Lieutenant Hertzfeld said the department has no affiliation with the Web site.
