Toledo man shot while walking to work Friday morning

A Toledo man was shot on his way to work early Friday in North Toledo by someone who was trying to rob him, authorities said.

Deontae McCorvey, 28, was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his forearm, Toledo police said.

A hospital spokesman said she had no information about a person by that name.

Police said officers received a report of a fight and a person shot about 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of Mettler and Warsaw streets.

The victim told police he was walking to work at St. Vincent’s when a gray Chrysler sedan pulled up and four men emerged, according to a police statement.

The men — including the driver who had a large handgun — demanded money from McCorvey, police reported.

When he handed over $300, the driver shot him in the forearm, the victim told police.

As the victim fled on foot, the driver apparently shot at him several more times but missed, police said. Officers recovered several shell casings.

Gary Rogolsky, 62, a neighbor, was in a kitchen in the 2800 block of Warsaw about 6:30 a.m. when he heard several gunshots.

“I opened my back door, and there was this young black man sitting on my neighbor’s porch on Mettler. I asked him if he was OK, and he said he’‍d just been shot,” Mr. Rogolsky said.

He said the man then tried to get out into an alley through a gate, but he couldn’t open it, so he walked around the corner, ending up on Mr. Rogolsky’‍s porch.

“I got him a couple of rags to stop the bleeding and a cup of water after I called 911,” Mr. Rogolsky said.

He said this was the second shooting at the same corner in the last month. In the previous incident, someone shot into a house at Mettler and Warsaw without hitting anyone.

“I think this place is worse than some, better than others,” Mr. Rogolsky said. “After a while you just get used to it.”

Police said they had no suspects.

Seven people had been shot in Toledo since Saturday morning.

“Overall, the shootings have been way down,” Sgt. Joe Heffernan said. “Certainly we will see if there’‍s any relation to any other of the shootings. But so far we have no evidence to suggest that.”
