KELLEYS ISLAND, Ohio — The Coast Guard rescued two teenagers from Lake Erie Wednesday after the pair had to tread water for about 45 minutes.

The Coast Guard received a call at 1 p.m. that two teenagers were in need of assistance. The unidentified boater who made the call also gave life jackets to the two teens but was unable to take them aboard his own boat because of its small size.

About 20 minutes later the two teens were rescued by a Coast Guard boat and taken to Kelleys Island, where they were treated for hypothermia by emergency medical personnel and later released.

The water temperature in Lake Erie was 66 degrees.

The teens reported they had been canoeing when their boat began to sink.

The Coast Guard would not release information about the rescued teens, including their names or ages or where they are from.
