Toledo store owner shoots man inside shop, police say

A central Toledo carryout store owner shot a 19-year-old man Monday night, police said.

Owner of Howard‘s‍, Bobby Howard, 71, shot Jerold Evans, 19, inside the store at about 11:15 p.m., police said. According to an incident report and court affidavits, Mr. Evans allegedly went into the store, 1001 Nebraska Ave., with a loaded .45-caliber handgun, with one round in the chamber, and threatened to shoot his ex-girlfriend who was inside the store. Mr. Howard reportedly told police that he shot Mr. Evans once.

Police said they found Mr. Evans, of 855 Avondale Ave., in the 1100 block of Tecumseh Street with a gunshot wound to the back; he was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment. A  hospital spokesman said no patient by that name was at the facility.

Mr. Evans was charged in Toledo Municipal Court with carrying a concealed weapon and aggravated menacing. Mr. Howard was not charged.
