Swanton-area man remains in critical condition after crash

A 34-year-old Swanton-area man remains in critical condition in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center as a result of a two-vehicle crash in western Lucas County.

Derek Molina was flown from the scene at Frankfort Road and State Rt. 295 to the hospital after the crash, which occurred about 5:45 p.m. Monday on the Spencer-Harding township line, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

He was driving a van east on Frankfort and Corrie Nijakowski, 35, of the Swanton area, was driving a sport utility vehicle north on Route 295 when Mr. Molina failed to yield at the intersection, according to the patrol. His van was struck by the SUV and Mr. Molina, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out of the van, the patrol reported.

Mrs. Nijakowski, who wore a seat belt, was taken by Lucas County EMS to ProMedica St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was treated.
