Monroe County sheriff‘‍s deputies are negotiating with an armed man who fled into the woods near his home along Stoneybrook Lane in Temperance when police went to his home earlier today.

The incident began around 4:30 p.m. when authorities received a report of a troubled man who was in his home with a hand gun, Chief Deputy Heath Velliquette said.

When police arrived the 24-year-old, whom police would not identify, ran into the nearby woods with the gun, he said.

Deputies called for a SWAT team and cordoned off the neighbhorhood. Residents have been asked to stay indoors while deputies continue to talk to the man in the woods, Deputy Velliquette said.

“They’‍re still negotiating with him,” he said.
