PETERSBURG, Mich. — A Monroe County man was killed and another was in critical condition Saturday after a one-vehicle crash on Sylvania-Petersburg Road on Friday evening, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 9 p.m. just north of Ida Center Road in Summerfield Township, according to a Monroe County Sheriff’s report.

Three men, all from Summerfield Township, were traveling south on Sylvania-Petersburg in a sport-utility vehicle when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway, traveled through a yard, and struck an asphalt tractor-trailer parked in a driveway, deputies said.

Front-seat passenger Eulogio Sargento-Salas, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rear-seat passenger Uriel Lopez, 36, was flown to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he remained in critical condition Saturday night.

Driver Pedro Mateo, 29, was taken to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday night.

None of the three appeared to have worn seat belts at the time of the crash, which was strong enough for passenger air bags to deploy, the sheriff’s office reported.
