Man who crashed into store had a medical condition
8/2/2014SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man whose Cadillac went through the front of Dick’s Sporting Goods in Erie County’s Perkins Township on Thursday suffered a medical condition, Perkins Township authorities said.
Charles Hacker, 78, was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky after the 8:50 p.m. incident, along with his wife, Dianne Hacker, 74. Perkins Township police Chief Ken Klamar said their injuries were not life-threatening. A hospital spokesman said Friday the Hackers were both listed in good condition.
The car narrowly missed employees and shoppers before hitting the back wall. No one in the store was hurt, although at least two employees and a man shopping for shoes with his young son had to jump out of the way.
“For as bad as this crash was, it ended ... as good as you can expect,” Chief Klamar said. “You are never in a business and looking over your shoulder for a car.”
Chief Klamar said Mr. Hacker told authorities he did not remember the crash.
He crashed into a concrete bollard in front of the store, uprooting it and taking it with the car through the front glass doors and displays, through the shoe department, and into a wall that separates the store from a storage area before crashing into the back wall of the building.
Owners tell police they hoped to reopen by today.
