Police blitz leads to 1,087 traffic stops

‘Operation Shield’ was aimed to reduce crashes, crime

A targeted police enforcement blitz in the Toledo area from July 31 to Aug. 2 netted a number of arrests and citations.

Federal, Ohio, and Michigan law-enforcement agencies and 12 departments from Lucas and Wood counties participated in “Operation Shield,” which was aimed at reducing fatal traffic crashes and criminal activity.

Together, the departments conducted 1,087 traffic stops.

Twenty-four people were arrested on charges of drunken driving or under the influence of drugs; 36 were charged with driving with a suspended license; 102 were charged with misdemeanor criminal offenses; 60 were arrested for felonies; 126 were arrested on misdemeanor warrants; 13 were arrested on felony warrants, and 43 people were cited for not wearing a seat belt.

The agencies seized more than 4 pounds of marijuana, 100 marijuana plants, 4 ounces of ecstasy, 3 ounces of crack, 1 gram of cocaine, 1 ounce of heroin, 284 illegal prescription pills, nine handguns, one stolen vehicle, and $47,609 in illegal drug proceeds.

The Ohio Investigative Unit also conducted alcohol compliance checks in the metro area.

Agents charged an unknown number of businesses with civil violations and also charged an unknown number of individuals for underage consumption or possession of alcohol.
