EDON, Ohio — A small plane crashed Monday after attempting to take off from a private airfield in Williams County near State Rt. 49, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

The pilot, Samuel Santa-Rita, 46, of Edon, was the only occupant of the 1992 Maule single-engine aircraft. Troopers said he suffered minor injuries and sought his own treatment.

The plane took off shortly after noon and after turning left, lost altitude and crashed into a wooded area near County Road H, about three miles south of Edon, troopers said.

The highway patrol turned over further investigation of the crash to the Federal Aviation Administration office in Columbus.
