Swanton trooper Hannum honored

The Ohio Highway Patrol has named Trooper Brett Hannum the 2016 trooper of the year at the Swanton post.

Fellow officers stationed at the Swanton post chose Mr. Hannum, 34, based on leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, enthusiastic work attitude, and cooperation with supervisors, peers, and the public.

Mr. Hannum is now in contention for the Findlay District and Ohio State Trooper of the Year Award to be announced at a later date.

Mr. Hannum joined the Highway Patrol in 2011 and has served at the Swanton post for the past two years. He started his career at the Van Wert post and has worked at both the Findlay and Bowling Green posts before being assigned to the Swanton post.

Originally from Swanton, he is a graduate of Swanton High School and Owens Community College with an associate degree in criminal justice. Mr. Hannum previously served in the United States Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, completing multiple tours of duty in Iraq.

Mr. Hannum also has been awarded the patrol’s health and physical fitness award, safe driving award, and military service award.

He and his wife, Katherine, live in Maumee with their two children, Karli and Evie.
