PORT CLINTON, Ohio — A body was recovered Saturday from Lake Erie near West Sister Island, authorities said.

The Ottawa County sheriff’s office is investigating. Deputies learned of the discovery about 4:55 p.m.

A person out fishing in the lake reported seeing the body, said Lt. Ben Chamberlain, public affairs officer of Coast Guard Sector Detroit. A boat from the Coast Guard’s Marblehead station pulled the body from the water and delivered it to sheriff’s deputies in Port Clinton.

The body was of a female and in a state of advanced decomposition, Lieutenant Chamberlain said.

Deputies turned the body over to the Ottawa County coroner’s office, authorities said.

The island is northwest of Port Clinton, which is 40 miles east of Toledo.
