The long-awaited second fire station in Perrysburg is moving forward after city council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a design services contract.

Council approved a $35,000 station design contract with Toledo-based the Collaborative Inc. The facility will be built on the site of the old Perrysburg Township fire station.

The city acquired the land on Fort Meigs Road in January for $52,735. Deed restrictions require the land to be used for a fire station.

Perrysburg Fire Chief Jeff Klein expects the new station to be about 20,000 square feet, and be in operation sometime around the end of 2018 or in early 2019.

“It will work today, and for the future,” he said, adding that the life of a fire station is typically 75 years.

The station will feature new designs and technology that keep the carcinogenic contaminants often picked up at fires out of the station’s living areas. It also will feature a room large enough to host training sessions that now take firefighters out of town.

The exact price is not set, though the city has put aside $1.75 million for construction costs.

In addition to the $35,000 approved Tuesday, the design work will cost an additional $58,000 for engineering and landscape architecture services, along with 8.5 percent of the construction cost estimate that the Collaborative will develop.
