  • A man died at a hospital after he was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound in a vehicle in South Toledo Monday, authorities said.

Dakoda Rogers, 25, was pronounced dead at University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, according to Toledo police. The autopsy by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, Dr. James Patrick, the county coroner, said.

Toledo police are searching for the shooter who fired at the vehicle, striking Mr. Rogers and causing a brief lockdown of three Toledo Public Schools buildings.

Officers responded to shots fired about 2:34 p.m. at a South Avenue and Spencer Street parking lot. They learned the victim attempted to drive from the area. He collided with a nearby vehicle and building, Toledo police spokesman Sgt. Kevan Toney said.

Bowsher High School, Arlington Elementary, and Walbridge Elementary were locked down for about five minutes just before 3 p.m., TPS spokesman Mary Beth Matthews said.

Sergeant Toney said it's upsetting that a gunman would fire as children were coming home from school.

“It's very frustrating from a law enforcement perspective where we are in the neighborhood, we are doing our best, and yet this happens,” he said.

Mr. Rogers’ death is the 38th so far in 2017 in the Toledo metro area, with 37 of them occurring within city limits.

It’s also the second firearm homicide in Toledo in recent days. Jerry McNeal, 31, was fatally shot Saturday and died in a hospital after officers were dispatched to reports of a shooting in the 1800 block of Bigelow Street.
