AYERSVILLE — A fireman and sheriff's deputy were injured early Tuesday morning battling a structure fire at the intersection of Kinner Road and Ayersville Pleasant Bend Road.

The firefighter fell into an open hatch of an abandoned cistern, but held onto a fire hose at the edge of the opening. The deputy who rescued him was also hurt, and both were transported to a local hospital. Their conditions are not known.

The two-story structure was fully engulfed when crews arrived about 3:45 a.m. About 15,000 gallons of water were required to extinguish the fire.

The Highland Township Fire Department was called to the incident. Mutual aid was provided by the Defiance Fire Department, New Bavaria Fire Department, and Defiance County Sheriff's Office.
