When Mr. Holmes was removed from the car, a bullet hole was discovered in the door, police said.

Mr. Holmes was shot at least once, causing his death, according to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office. Police did not specify where he was shot.

Toledo police confirmed Mr. Holmes was believed to be involved in a recent shoot-out between vehicles in West Toledo Dec. 6.

“That’s an angle that detectives are looking into,” Toledo Police Department spokesman Sgt. Kevan Toney said.

Mr. Holmes was charged with discharge of a firearm over a public road and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. A Toledo Municipal Court judge released him on his own recognizance.
