Missing autistic child found safe near Anthony Wayne Trail

With temperatures dipping as low as 10 degrees Saturday morning, Toledo police were relieved when a South Toledo family spotted a young man in distress and called police.

Quamell Jones, 15, had been reported missing about 4 a.m. by his family after he walked out of their North Holland-Sylvania Road apartment and disappeared. He was treated for exposure but suffered no other injuries, said Sgt. Kevan Toney, TPD spokesman.

He said police had deployed detectives, its canine unit, and a drone to search for the young man, who is autistic. The information also was posted to social media, but it was Ned Mehling and his family who noticed the Quamell youth at about 10 a.m. near Sherwood Avenue and the Anthony Wayne Trail on their way to Wixey Bakery. 

Police Chief George Kral thanked them for helping find the missing teen, who had wandered 8 miles from his home. He was wearing a coat but no hat, Sergeant Toney said.

“I have said it time and time again: we need the help of all Toledoans to keep this city safe,” the chief said in a news release. “This is a perfect example of that.”

Sergeant Toney said it was “a very happy ending after some really tragic ones.”

Jeffrey Millns, 67, was found dead in a field off Angola Road Dec. 27 after going missing from a South Toledo elder care center a few days before.

On Jan. 2, James Flunder, 67, of East Toledo was found dead at the Monroe schools' bus yard in Monroe Township.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances around Mr. Jones leaving his home.
