Man in custody, uninjured, after being fired on by Paulding County Sheriff's deputy

OAKWOOD, OHIO — A Paulding County Sheriff’s deputy shot at—but didn’t hit—a man who pointed a gun at officers during a call for a suicidal man Friday evening, authorities said.

Officers were called to the 100 block of North First Street in the village of Oakwood, where 47-year-old Ray J. Osborn, of Continental, Ohio, exited a vehicle with a pistol to his head, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. 

Deputy Sheriff Jared Renollet told the man to drop his weapon, which he pointed at the deputy. During the exchange, the deputy fired three rounds, hitting the vehicle’s window, according to the statement.

Mr. Osborn put the weapon in the car and walked toward the deputy, who deployed his Taser on the man when he did not follow further commands. A woman was standing by the passenger’s side door was uninjured. 

Mr. Osborn was taken to Paulding County Jail after being treated and released from a local hospital.

“I am grateful no one was hurt as a result of this incident,” said Sheriff Jason K. Landers in the statement. “After viewing the scene and reviewing initial statements this could have ended much worse. An internal investigation will be completed to ensure Jared complied with office policy. From what I know right now he did a fantastic job.”
