Murder suspect in custody after man fatally shot in West Toledo

One man is dead and another charged with murder after a shooting Friday in West Toledo, according to Toledo police.

Officers responded at roughly 1 p.m. Friday to the area of Fern and Reen drives where police said they found Eliakim Yates, 18, with at least one gunshot wound. He was treated at the scene before being transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital. His injuries are believed to be non life-threatening.

Officers also responded to Mercy Health St. Anne Hospital where William Axel, 20, was found with a gunshot wound. He died at 2:08 p.m., and and Toledo police determined Mr. Yates to be responsible.

Mr. Yates was charged with murder and will be booked into Lucas County Jail upon his release from the hospital.

Kevin Dazell, 17, was also taken into custody after police determined he shot Mr. Yates. He is charged with felonious assault and was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

Dr. Maneesha Pandey, a Lucas County deputy coroner, ruled Mr. Axel’s death a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound in the neck.
