Police on Friday apprehended a man accused of barricading himself inside a Perrysburg business and swinging a baseball bat at officers.

Officers responded at about 10:15 a.m. to a report of a man acting erratically and violently near Roachton Road and State Rt. 25, according to a Perrysburg police news release. They tried to calm him down but he ran away and barricaded himself inside the Directions Credit Union, 4150 Brockway Dr., blocking the door with furniture.

Once inside he continued to try to hit officers and caused damage to the building. Police forced entry and took the man into custody. He refused to identify himself and claimed he suffered from a mental illness.

He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital by Perrysburg EMS for physical and mental evaluation.

Neither the citizens, the officers, nor the suspect were hurt. Criminal charges will be filed once the suspect is identified and released from the hospital, police said in the news release.
