Replacement levy sought for Area Office on Aging

8/19/2009

Lucas County commissioners voted yesterday to put a replacement levy for the Area Office on Aging on the Nov. 3 ballot.

The five-year, 0.45-mill levy would raise about $3.8 million and would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $13.78 a year. It would replace a five-year levy that expires Dec. 31.

Billie Johnson, director of the office on aging, said the money would be used for home care, Alzheimer s patient day care, senior center services, meal services at homes and other facilities, and operation of the senior centers. She said the office s services have expanded 64 percent since 2000, and the number of seniors being served has risen from 21,000 to 33,400 during that period.

The levy accounts for about 10 percent of the agency s budget in Lucas County. A mill equates to $1 for each $1,000 of assessed property value.
