Recount confirms Springfield trustee

Robert Bethel is officially the newly elected trustee in Springfield Township after a mandatory recount Wednesday.

The Lucas County Board of Elections certified Mr. Bethel's victory in the Nov. 3 election after recounting the votes at a randomly selected polling location.

The recount was conducted because less than one-half of 1 percent of the vote separated him from his closest losing opponent, Helen Darrah. The vote totals were unchanged at 2,503 for Mr. Bethel, 2,497 for Ms. Darrah, and 2,156 for Thomas Anderson.

Not affected by the recount was Marylin Yoder who was re-elected with 3,632 votes.

The polling location where the recount occurred was Dorr Street Elementary School, 1205 King Road, where Springfield Township precincts 3, 4, 16, and 17 vote.

Also unchanged was the tie vote on whether to allow Sunday liquor sales at East Toledo Convenience Store, 1110 East Broadway.

The issue was declared defeated because a majority is needed to pass a ballot question, Elections Director Linda Howe said.
