School board member John Crandall emerges victorious

School board member John Crandall knocked incumbent Kevin Haddad out of the Sylvania Township trustee race while incumbent John Jennewine held onto his seat.

At midnight, clapping and cheers were heard at Papa G’s restaurant on Main Street in Sylvania where Mr. Crandall, school board members, and family welcomed the final election results.

Jennewine

“We’ve worked on projects before, and I will get along with whomever the voters select,” Mr. Crandall said about working on the three-member trustee board with Mr. Jennewine and Neal Mahoney.

Crandall

Mr. Crandall came in second place with 22 percent of the votes, and Mr. Jennewine was in first place with 27 percent.

Hoffman

Mr. Jennewine’s and Mr. Haddad’s seats were also challenged by Penny Levine, who ran for the third time and lost, and Toledo business owner Don Miller.

Rothschild

Mr. Jennewine led the pack from the start with Mrs. Levine in second and Mr. Crandall trailing her with about 20 percent of the 40 precincts reporting. However, Mr. Crandall’s supporters said the city of Sylvania votes were the ones that would push the city resident to the top. Around 11:20 p.m. with 72 percent of the votes in, he had secured the seat.

Spiess

Mr. Haddad, kept a steady fourth place throughout the race, and captured only 19 percent of the votes.

Although he placed his candidate signs around the Sylvania area several weeks before the election — later than his opponents — Mr. Haddad did not believe that contributed to the results. Earlier in the day, candidates for both the trustee and the Sylvania school board campaigned at the major polling sites in Sylvania, including the American Legion Joseph W. Diehn Post 468.

Winners in the Sylvania school board race were incumbents Julie Hoffman and Dave Spiess. They will be joined by Stephen Rothschild. The other candidates were Mark Clark, Kevin Eff, and Carol McElfresh.

Sylvania City Council incumbents Mary Westphal, Mike Brown, and Katie Cappellini, and Mayor Craig Stough won their uncontested races.

Ms. Hoffman rose early Tuesday morning and spent most of the day at the American Legion, alongside other trustee hopefuls and their campaign supporters.

She and Mr. Jennewine’s campaign manager, Patrick Richardson, 22, agreed that this year there was a drop in voter turnout compared with the election four years ago.

Ms. Hoffman captured 24.81 percent of the votes.

She and Mr. Spiess held onto their spots on the five member school board, and they will be joined next year by Mr. Rothschild, who replaces Mr. Crandall.

Mr. Rothschild, who could not be reached for comment, is a lawyer with experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets. He consulted on the Sylvania Athletic Foundation’s gift-acceptance policy.

Among several organizations he is involved in is the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo.
