LIMA, Ohio — The topic at hand was balancing the federal budget, but Gov. John Kasich still took time on Monday to take a swing at the University of Michigan days before it squares off against his alma mater, Ohio State University, in the big rivalry game.

In reaction to suggestions from the state up north downplaying the annual rivalry, Mr. Kasich said, “When we beat you like a drum every year, you better start looking for a new rival.”

The remark perhaps drew a stronger response from an audience at Rhodes State College in Lima than his signing of letters accompanying a resolution passed by the General Assembly to join with other states to try to force Congress to enact a federal balanced budget amendment.

The Wolverines, after suffering four losses so far this season, will host the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor on Saturday as Ohio State hopes to maintain its undefeated record.
