Matt Cherry waves to the audience after he's sworn in as a new city councilman during the first Toledo City Council meeting of the year at One Government Center, today.

Matt Cherry, a business agent for Sheet Metal Workers Local 33, will replace D. Michael Collins on Toledo City Council.

After a swearing-in ceremony for both new Mayor Collins and some members of council, councilmen voted 8-3 in favor of Mr. Cherry over Marcia Helman, a business owner.

The Lucas County Democratic Party this week selected Mr. Cherry, 33, as its pick for the Collins seat.

Also at today's meeting, Paula Hicks-Hudson was re-elected council president.
