Kaptur running unopposed in 9th District race

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) faces no opposition in the May 6 Democratic primary election for the 9th Congressional District with the withdrawal of her only opponent.

Cory Hoffman, a Huron lawyer, withdrew as a candidate on Thursday because of flaws in his signature petitions.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is scheduled to meet Tuesday to certify petitions for the primary election.

The clear sailing for the Democratic nomination is a relief for Miss Kaptur who fought former U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D., Cleveland) for the nomination in 2012. The 9th District, which historically has centered on Toledo as its main population center, now stretches from Toledo to Cleveland.

Two Republicans have filed for the primary to challenge Miss Kaptur in November. They are Robert Horrocks Jr. of Lakewood and Richard May of Cleveland. Susan Purviance, a University of Toledo professor, filed to run as the Socialist candidate but withdrew Feb. 7.
